Why use wireless sensors network?

Over the last seven years one of the company’s basic research activities was in the field of wireless sensor networks. For more than three years, the company has been developing a hardware and software platform to support applications based on smart wireless sensors. The platform is used in a number of European Technical Institutes and Universities. However the business target was not just to develop another wireless platform but to develop a sophisticated system with smart collectors that will be applied in complex and demanding environment where cabling is not an option.

LAROS should not be considered as a control System. It’s a fact that in modern vessels there are very advanced control systems equipped with hundreds of sensors. Where can I install LAROS in the vessel?

LAROS is a technologically advanced system that has been specially designed and developed to monitor uninterruptedly all the critical operation parameters of a vessel.

The wireless collectors network is tasked to watch over complex functions and multiple conditions in all areas of the vessel. It automatically generates and forwards reports about abnormal situations (suspicious-out of limits measurements etc) to vessel engineers and fleet managers in the HQs. LAROS Intelligent Collectors use algorithms to analyze data collected by multiple points and they produce early warnings, predictions or suggestions for proper action.

The wireless collectors can be installed in any Point of Interest in a vessel and take measurements of temperature, humidity, CO2, liquid level, fuel oil flow, Main Engine power-torque-rpm, Turbocharger RPM etc. in order to monitor remotely the condition of these points.

What is Condition Based Maintenance?

Condition-based maintenance (CBM), shortly described, is maintenance when need arises. This maintenance is performed after one or more indicators show that equipment is going to fail or that equipment performance is deteriorating.

This concept is applicable to mission critical systems that incorporate active redundancy and fault reporting. It is also applicable to non-mission critical systems that lack redundancy and fault reporting.

Condition-based maintenance was introduced to try to maintain the correct equipment at the right time. CBM is based on using real-time data to prioritize and optimize maintenance resources. Observing the state of the system is known as condition monitoring. Such a system will determine the equipment's health, and act only when maintenance is actually necessary. Ideally condition-based maintenance will allow the maintenance personnel to do only the right things, minimizing spare parts cost, system downtime and time spent on maintenance.
